Carpentaria Marine Services has a tight and effective company management structure, which is spearheaded by Managing Director Vance Wallin. Details of key personnel are below. We employ a dedicated team of permanent staff and administration staff, engaging skilled casual labour on an as needed basis up to 70 employees, depending on workloads. All team members are carefully selected for their skills and experience, sharing our vision of compliance, safety, quality and delivering work on time and budget.

Vance Wallin is also well known across Cape York for the extensive volunteer work he has undertaken. This includes the establishment of the Turtle Camp, located at Janie Creek Mapoon, offering in-kind services to not-for-profit community groups on Cape York and being the President of the Western Cape Chamber of Commerce. His volunteer work was recognised when he was awarded Citizen of the Year for the Weipa community in 2012.
Living in Cape York Peninsula and Far North Queensland has provided Sam the unique platform to enhance employment and capability, by creating opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In addition to her role at Carpentaria Marine Services, she is also a Director of Remote Industry Solutions. Peter is an accomplished manager with decades of experience in maritime logistics, business development, operational logistics and management. Recognised for his strategic foresight and ability to optimise complex operations, Peter has consistently driven growth and innovation across the organisations he has worked with. His leadership style focuses on fostering collaboration, ensuring compliance, and delivering measurable results in challenging and remote environments.
Peter’s extensive career includes roles such as General Manager Queensland Operations at Sea Swift, where he managed 260 staff across logistics, marine freight and fuel services. He spearheaded the development of strategic business plans, established key performance indicators and nurtured stakeholder relationships with government agencies and local councils. His expertise extends to fuel trading, financial management and regulatory compliance, honed through roles like Commercial Manager and Company Secretary at Sea Swift and its affiliated businesses.
A passionate advocate for efficiency, service excellence, sustainability and triple bottom line performance, Peter has also contributed to the development of new market opportunities for Northern Queensland and the Torres Strait region. He combines his wealth of experience with a hands-on approach to leadership, and is a valued addition to the Carpentaria Marine Services leadership team.
Asa King is a highly experienced Operations Manager with over 20 years of experience in operational management, workforce coordination and project delivery. Having held a senior management position with Carpentaria Contracting for two decades, Asa brings extensive knowledge of managing complex operations, coordinating resources and maintaining high standards of safety, quality and productivity. His strong leadership capabilities and practical approach to operational challenges have been instrumental in delivering efficient and successful outcomes across a diverse range of projects.
Throughout his career, Asa has been responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, managing personnel and subcontractors, and ensuring the effective allocation of labour, equipment and resources. He specialises in operational planning, workforce management, safety compliance, quality control and continuous improvement. With a strong technical background as a qualified Electrical Fitter Mechanic, Asa combines hands-on industry knowledge with extensive management experience to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
As Weipa Operations Manager at Carpentaria Marine Services, Asa plays a key role in coordinating regional operations, overseeing operational teams and maintaining strong relationships with clients and stakeholders. His extensive knowledge of the Weipa operating environment, combined with his commitment to workplace safety, operational efficiency and continuous improvement, enables him to effectively manage changing project requirements and challenging operational conditions. Asa is a valued member of the management team, contributing to the continued growth and successful delivery of marine services throughout the region.
James Brand is a highly experienced Marine Fleet Superintendent with over 30 years of extensive experience in marine engineering, fleet management, vessel operations and regulatory compliance. His career spans a diverse range of maritime sectors, including commercial shipping, offshore operations, passenger vessels, fishing fleets, shipbuilding and naval projects. James has a proven track record in overseeing fleet operations, improving vessel performance and reliability, and maintaining high standards of safety, operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.
Throughout his career, James has held senior management positions including Marine Superintendent, Fleet Engineer, Operations Manager and Project Manager. He specialises in overseeing vessel maintenance programs, fleet performance, dry-docking, vessel inspections, regulatory compliance and major engineering projects. James has successfully managed diverse vessel fleets, coordinated complex shipbuilding and refurbishment projects, and led multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, efficient and cost-effective marine operations. His extensive experience in preventative maintenance, asset management and operational planning ensures vessels remain compliant, reliable and ready to meet demanding operational requirements.
James holds a Chief Engineer Class 1 Unlimited qualification and possesses extensive expertise in maritime regulations, marine surveying, safety management systems and technical fleet oversight. His strong leadership, practical engineering knowledge and strategic approach to fleet management enable him to effectively manage operational challenges across Australia, New Zealand and international waters. James plays an integral role in the management team at Carpentaria Marine Services, ensuring fleet reliability, regulatory compliance and the continued delivery of safe, efficient and high-quality marine services.
Naomi Bateman is an experienced Business Administrator with over 14 years of experience across business operations, financial management, administration and logistics coordination. She has a strong background in managing day-to-day business activities, streamlining administrative processes and supporting operational teams to ensure efficiency and successful project delivery.
Throughout her career, Naomi has held various roles across operations management, office management, accounts and logistics, developing extensive knowledge in financial reporting, budget control, resource allocation, scheduling and compliance. Her experience includes coordinating personnel, managing operational requirements, overseeing financial performance and implementing procedures to improve business efficiency.
Naomi brings a proactive and solutions-focused approach to her role, with strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills. Her ability to manage competing priorities, adapt to changing operational requirements and work effectively with management, employees and external stakeholders makes her a valuable member of the team.

Daniel Wright is an experienced Operations Supervisor with a strong background in marine operations, mining, resource processing and construction. With over 15 years of combined industry experience, Daniel brings extensive knowledge of operational management, workforce coordination and workplace safety. His practical approach to problem-solving, strong leadership capabilities and commitment to operational efficiency make him a valuable member of the Carpentaria Marine Services management team.
Daniel has significant experience supervising large-scale mining and shiploading operations, having spent nearly eight years with Rio Tinto in Weipa. During this time, he was responsible for overseeing fixed plant operations, bauxite processing and vessel loading activities across multiple operational areas. Managing teams of up to 20 personnel and subcontractors, Daniel developed extensive expertise in coordinating resources, maintaining production schedules, managing operational challenges and working collaboratively with stakeholders to achieve safe and efficient vessel turnaround times.
In addition to his mining and operational experience, Daniel has a strong maritime background, holding a Coxswain qualification and accumulating over 1,200 days of sea time. His experience extends to vessel operations, marine tourism, construction and business management, providing him with a diverse and practical skill set. Daniel’s extensive knowledge of Weipa’s industrial and marine operating environments, combined with his commitment to safety, teamwork and delivering successful outcomes, enables him to effectively coordinate day-to-day operations and support the delivery of reliable, efficient marine services at Carpentaria Marine Services.
